JoAnne Redding: Music

The Running Kind

JoAnne Redding / Pink Slip Publishing (ASCAP)

Thanks for stopping by!

I could say there was some deep self-awareness that led to this song, but in fact I just wanted to write a song with the word "blacktop" in it. After all, it is a cool word! It was tough getting started, but then suddenly the song became personal, and I couldn't get to my guitar fast enough. This song was featured on the daytime drama All My Children.

Always searching up ahead
Grasping at dreams flashing through my head
Forever restless, always wanting more
Wondering what waits outside my door

But once I hit that blacktop
You know that I just can’t stop
I’m the running kind
If I’m running from or running to
Man, if I only knew
The peace I long to find
I’m the running kind

Years of thought and therapy
Can’t erase this trait in me
You say “try,” but it’s who I am
Do you really give a damn?

Cause once I hit that blacktop
You know that I just can’t stop
I’m the running kind
If I’m running from or running to
Man, if you only knew
The peace I long to find
I’m the running kind

You spin my wheels, you hold me down
But that’s all changing now...

Cause there’s someone out there for me
Who’ll be content just to run beside of me
But no one here will understand
When I leave here and your ring’s not on my hand
But once I hit that blacktop
You know that I just can’t stop
I’m the running kind
If I’m running from or running to
Baby, you never knew
The peace I longed to find
I’m the running kind
